Recent history clearly refutes your contention. The left has consistently rallied around convicted cop killers and murderous gang leaders who have raped and murdered as a way of life. The left's sympathies are with anarchists, communists, and other disolusioned groups, even radical islamists who are now in vogue. To say otherwise is manifestly wrong. Now you know.

I can appreciate your argument, however when these government officials are allowed to synthesize decision trees against vulnerable and off-base people, (i.e. present them with the means to carry things out) then they can basically create an endless mill of bad stuff happening, while also posturing as the saviors of society. It's supposed to be illegal entrapment but it's completely out of control. Certainly Democrats are as complicit in this scheme as Republicans.
Everyone should realize this kind of messaging is terror-statism at its worst!

...As for St Paul, Crowder and McKay realized it was both implausible and a bad idea. They were trying to back out of it. McKay wanted to fly out of town. Vadum should ask Darby what was the late night conversation at Hard Times Cafe, the critical conversation of intent wherein McKay obviously didn't want to go forth on it, and thus, of course, the FBI didn't record it even though they should have. These facts are at the core of the case, a key reason why the first trial was a hung jury.

Even if Darby instigated them, at some point, that little voice that lives inside McKay's and Crowder's heads could have said, "ya know...maybe setting innocent people on fire isn't the optimal way to promote social justice, and is morally wrong besides. Hell, it may even backfire and turn everyone against the cause. How many Molotov cocktails did Gandhi build, after all?". To their credit, it appears from the article that that voice did speak up. Too bad McKay and Crowder didn't listen to it.

When your line of thinking begins to lead you to the conclusion that outright murder---painful murder, at that (being burned to death is no fun)---is an acceptable method of promoting justice, something has gone horribly, horribly wrong inside you. And if all that it takes to get you to that point is some guy telling you that it would be a good idea, what does that say about you?

Oh, BTW, do you happen to have any independent, nonpartisan sources for your claim that the JTTF fabricates terrorist cases, presumably to establish a "climate of fear" to keep minorities and left-wing groups down? Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, after all...

This account of what happened leaves out the intervening months in which Darby manipulated the group, as well as the turns of events in St. Paul. Is it at all possible to reach the author of this piece by phone? See Nigel's long comment above for the more salient elements.

Joint Terrorism Task Forces fabricate terrorist cases and discredit dissident movements by using informants to set up trauma-based behavior modification of the public, generally against racial and religious minorities and left-wing groups. Whenever there is an incident, there is virtually always an FBI informant prodding things along. It's the classic COINTELPRO system.

I would just like to set this writer straight - Vadum got fed a line of crap from a perpetual narcissist and all-around weasel. He easily could have discouraged the two from Texas against this, but it was necessary as always to fabricate an external threat. Does this site even have a phone number? Thanks.

The only reason that McKay took a plea in the second trial was because he didn't want to testify against his friend Crowder or force Crowder to testify against him.

The first trial was hung for good reason, because a jury didn't find the prosecution's arguments credible. The entire case against McKay hung on Darby's testimony, and none of their non-electronic interactions—in this day and age—were recorded by the FBI. They were sitting in a van "taking notes".

In between the two trials, a lot of pressure and threats were leveled against Crowder and McKay by the prosecution. With your reverent judge-quoting, you sound like the kind of person who is completely unaware of the kind of pressure and threats that are directed towards defendants by prosecutors in the court system. You act like you are unaware that there are politics at play during trials that have nothing to do with facts or justice. Not all of us are that naive.

Since 9/11, FBI agents get bonuses for terrorism convictions. What we have seen is a redefinition of "terrorism" to include any direct action organizing, which is why the nonviolent "RNC 8" activists were initially charged with "terrorism" before that ludicrous charge was dropped. This encouragement to find terrorists under the beds benefits no one.

In the end, McKay's family were poor and their lawyer wasn't that impressive. It became a choice between gambling facing many years in jail or just a couple, of ratting out a friend or vice versa, and the end result was that McKay was advised/decided to take a plea.

Because McKay took a plea for the second trial, he technically negated his earlier trial's defense that he was "entrapped" which is why the judge made that statement. The conviction would not have been credible if that had not been addressed. It's not the smoking gun you believe it is. It was part of the deal.

During the sentencing, the prosecution played jailhouse phone conversations from shortly after McKay's arrest between McKay and his dad (to demonstrate something else) in which McKay said, "Bradley and I wouldn't have even come to St. Paul if it hadn't been for Brandon Darby".

That pretty much says it all. Darby was an older, nationally-known activist who was greatly admired by McKay and Crowder. Darby spent a lot of time in the months before the RNC manipulating Crowder and McKay by belittling them for not being "men" and pushing them to do real action. He helped convince them to go to St. Paul, all the while pushing them to do something to prove themselves. Disgusting.

Brandon Darby claimed in the trial that he had done "everything short of telling them that I was working with the FBI" to discourage them from using Molotovs. I suppose this is why the court record of the text messages he sent to McKay, who was wavering about proceeding with the plan to Molotov a police parking lot (not delegates), included the line:

Darby: "it's your call. I support you making whatever choice you are comfortable with. Be proud of yourself for your work and take a chill"...

That's hardly "everything short of telling them that I was working with the FBI", is it Matthew?

Court notes can be read here: http://rnc08report.org/archive/738.shtml

Darby's former (non-informant, activist) associates in Austin remember a man who was always pushing other people to do extreme stuff, including the planned bombing of the conservative bookstore. All this time he was working for the FBI, while pushing people to blow up a right wing bookstore.

It would have taken Darby a few sentences to dissuade McKay and Crowder from the Molotov route. But then he wouldn't have been that useful an informant/entrapper, would he? There would have been no conviction, and the $50 million security money and pre-RNC hype that justified it would have been shown to be the swilling on the Federal trough that it was.

In the other Molotov case at the RNC, Matthew DePalma was driven out to wastelands in the Roseville suburb of the Twin Cities by the other FBI informant/entrapper, where they *both* constructed and tested Molotov cocktails. DePalma was also isolated and scared by the prosecutors early in the post-RNC story and took a plea.

A shame! I would loved to have hear the other FBI informant, Andrew Darst, make a similar claim that while he was driving DePalma to buy Molotov ingredients and to the wasteland to make and test Molotovs that he had done "everything short of telling them that I was working with the FBI" to discourage DePalma's actions. These people are liars because they have something to gain from their pushing activists into crimes. It's called cash.

How long do you think it would take you to dissuade a friend of yours who greatly respected you from carrying out an act of violence, Matthew? Months or a few minutes? Please.

This isn't a story of someone who saw someone about to do something that was going to hurt someone and told the cops in order to stop it. This is someone who was involved for several months, who co-organized the Austin to MN trip, who has a history of encouraging people to violence including fire-bombings specifically, who could have stopped all of this at any time. There is absolutely nothing credible about Darby's narrative whatsoever. Good luck with your hero narrative.

They were sitting in a van “taking notes”.

What we have seen is a redefinition of “terrorism” to include any direct action organizing, which is why the nonviolent “RNC 8″ activists were initially charged with “terrorism” before that ludicrous charge was dropped. This encouragement to find terrorists under the beds benefits no one.

In the end, McKay’s family were poor and their lawyer wasn’t that impressive. It became a choice between gambling facing many years in jail or just a couple, of ratting out a friend or vice versa, and the end result was that McKay was advised/decided to take a plea.

Because McKay took a plea for the second trial, he technically negated his earlier trial’s defense that he was “entrapped” which is why the judge made that statement. The conviction would not have been credible if that had not been addressed. It’s not the smoking gun you believe it is. It was part of the deal.

During the sentencing, the prosecution played jailhouse phone conversations from shortly after McKay’s arrest between McKay and his dad (to demonstrate something else) in which McKay said, “Bradley and I wouldn’t have even come to St. Paul if it hadn’t been for Brandon Darby”.

That pretty much says it all. Darby was an older, nationally-known activist who was greatly admired by McKay and Crowder. Darby spent a lot of time in the months before the RNC manipulating Crowder and McKay by belittling them for not being “men” and pushing them to do real action. He helped convince them to go to St. Paul, all the while pushing them to do something to prove themselves. Disgusting.

Brandon Darby claimed in the trial that he had done “everything short of telling them that I was working with the FBI” to discourage them from using Molotovs. I suppose this is why the court record of the text messages he sent to McKay, who was wavering about proceeding with the plan to Molotov a police parking lot (not delegates), included the line:

Darby: “it’s your call. I support you making whatever choice you are comfortable with. Be proud of yourself for your work and take a chill”…

That’s hardly “everything short of telling them that I was working with the FBI”, is it Matthew?

Court notes can be read here: http://rnc08report.org/archive/738.shtml

Darby’s former (non-informant, activist) associates in Austin remember a man who was always pushing other people to do extreme stuff, including the planned bombing of the conservative bookstore. All this time he was working for the FBI, while pushing people to blow up a right wing bookstore.

It would have taken Darby a few sentences to dissuade McKay and Crowder from the Molotov route. But then he wouldn’t have been that useful an informant/entrapper, would he? There would have been no conviction, and the $50 million security money and pre-RNC hype that justified it would have been shown to be the swilling on the Federal trough that it was.

In the other Molotov case at the RNC, Matthew DePalma was driven out to wastelands in the Roseville suburb of the Twin Cities by the other FBI informant/entrapper, where they *both* constructed and tested Molotov cocktails. DePalma was also isolated and scared by the prosecutors early in the post-RNC story and took a plea.

A shame! I would loved to have hear the other FBI informant, Andrew Darst, make a similar claim that while he was driving DePalma to buy Molotov ingredients and to the wasteland to make and test Molotovs that he had done “everything short of telling them that I was working with the FBI” to discourage DePalma’s actions. These people are liars because they have something to gain from their pushing activists into crimes. It’s called cash.

How long do you think it would take you to dissuade a friend of yours who greatly respected you from carrying out an act of violence, Matthew? Months or a few minutes? Please.

This isn’t a story of someone who saw someone about to do something that was going to hurt someone and told the cops in order to stop it. This is someone who was involved for several months, who co-organized the Austin to MN trip, who has a history of encouraging people to violence including fire-bombings specifically, who could have stopped all of this at any time. There is absolutely nothing credible about Darby’s narrative whatsoever. Good luck with your hero narrative.

I was stunned when I heard that Flight 253 hero Jasper Schuringa was a Dutch filmmaker, because it was the unspeakably brutal murder of another Dutch filmmaker -- Theo Van Gogh -- that set the tone of reluctance of the art world to criticize Islam in the same way they criticize other belief systems.

violence in the name of any cause diminishes the cause.what could possibly have been achieved that would have been worth the lives of anyone at the convention.the same is true in the abortion issue or any other issue.i'm glad it was reported as a terrorist plot.these kind of actions are carried out with no hope of gaining anything but the self satisfaction of sick twisted individuals, their ideas are too twisted to be debated sensibly so they lash out like animals.these attackers should have been sentenced to life in prison.they have no place in america,it's a shame darby got such a pass.

If Nigel Parry attended the trial then he should know that Brandon Darby did not encourage the crime.

In fact the judge specifically made a finding that Darby, to use the wording of a DOJ press release, that "McKay obstructed justice at his January trial by falsely accusing a government informant, Brandon Darby, of inducing him to
manufacture the Molotov cocktails."

Violence against an idea, no matter the direction or the cause is wrong. Violence led by an informant to prove the followers are prone to violence is also wrong. Perhaps we, as Americans, need to stop thinking in terms of left v. right, or Dem. v. Rep. and think of good or bad for the U.S.A.

To the best of my knowledge, no one person or side has the "correct" answer, but, perhaps if we listen to each other, we just might find the best answer.

Brandon Darby absolutely discredited himself as a hero in the "This American Life" interview and made it clear that he was the one who'd egged the boys on in the "plot." It's a fascinating, lengthy interview with him which, in his own words, leaves no doubt that he was responsible as an FBI source who actually instigated the attempted violence -- www.thisamericanlife.org/Radio_Episode.aspx?sched=1300

If this is the kind of "credible" news coverage that we can expect from Daily Caller than I won't be wasting my time here. I can go watch Fox News if I want to be lied to.

I totally agree. The left is no more calling these people heroes than the right is calling Timothy McVeigh a hero. Anyone that tries to make their point with violence is wrong; I wouldn’t even give them the credit of a political affiliations. Like you said, this article clearly suggests that the left sympathizes with these radicals and that is not only absurd, there is no room for it in adult political discourse.
