A post about a Reason magazine event that turns into an examination of libertarianism as I understand it and then just sort of fizzles out

I’m still working out what this blog is going to be, and so far Tucker and Neil have not punished me physically for any of it. And people seem to appreciate my personal tales of being a clumsy, overaged infant finding my way in Washington. So I figured I’d talk a little bit about the Reason magazine party I went to last night.

If you’ve never read Reason, it’s a libertarian journal. If you don’t know what “libertarian” means, that’s okay because neither do I. Not exactly. No two libertarians seem to agree on what the word means, which I think itself is a hallmark of libertarianism. Tucker identifies as one. I think? And I definitely agree with what I understand of it: We can’t have anarchy because that would be, well, anarchy. But when it comes to government, less is more.

The best encapsulation of what I understand as libertarianism is from Jesse Hughes, lead singer of the band Eagles of Death Metal. Just before the election, he said:

So that’s what libertarianism is. I think. If I’m totally off-base, I’m sure somebody or everybody will let me know.

Reason‘s current editor-in-chief is Matt Welch, who was one of the first bloggers I ever read. He and I haven’t always agreed on everything over the years, but I think he’s a really good writer, and his old site was one of my biggest inspirations when I was dipping my toes into the blogwater back in… what was it, 1947? A while ago. And Reason‘s Hit & Run is a damn good blog.

Matt was nice enough to invite me to a Reason event or get-together or whatever the smart people call it. It was for a very important book, the title of which I did not think to ask. I went and had a couple of beers and met some people. After that insane party the night before, why would I be nervous about meeting people? Because I’m me, that’s why. But it’s not so bad after all. (Hear that, AP?)

Also, their offices look like CTU.

I guess that’s all I had on that one. Quite a build-up for nothing. Well, I’ve already typed this out, so I might as well post it. I really have no idea what I’m doing. But I’m glad the fine folks at Reason are doing what they’re doing: giving me free beer. I did tip the bartender a buck a beer, because I’m not some sort of fascist.
