SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Evan Lysacek says the results at the national championships aren’t as important as testing out changes he’s made to his programs.

The reigning world champion has made some big changes to his free skate since winning the Grand Prix final last month, adding a quadruple jump, doing a sequence with a double axel rather than a three-jump combination and adding another triple at the end of his program. The changes are designed to pump up his technical score.

The United States can send three men to Vancouver, and Lysacek is all but assured of one of those spots. In addition to results at nationals, U.S. Figure Skating officials will consider results at worlds, the Grand Prix final and last year’s Four Continents, where Lysacek was second.
