Michael Steele denies Michael Steele was party chair when Ensign affair broke [video]

Gaffe king Michael Steele did what he does best and gaffed things up a little bit during a January 13 interview on Face to Face — and not just by referring to himself in the third person. The RNC chair didn’t appear to understand initially who the host, Jon Ralston of the Las Vegas Sun, was asking about when he threw out this hypothetical:

“Let me ask you, if you were chairman of the Republican party, and a Democratic senator had an affair with a staffer, had his parents pay her off, fired both her and her husband who worked for him and then tried to get the husband jobs, you’d be outraged, wouldn’t you?”

Steele balked at the question, and when Ralston revealed the hypothetical senator was John Ensign, responded: “I wasn’t chairman of the party at the time all that took place so I have no opinion on it.”

The problem is that he was, in fact, chairman of the RNC at the time (he was elected chair on January 30, 2009; Ensign formally acknowledged his affair in June of that year). Steele is the second major Republican figure to suffer an on-air bout of amnesia in as many weeks, after Rudy Giuliani when he discussed the shoe bomber Richard Reid.
