LONDON (AP) — A British scientist says some pedigree dogs are suffering from deformity and disease as a result of breeders’ search for alleged perfection.
A report by biologist Patrick Bateson calls for tougher standards to regulate breeders and better education throughout the industry to curb the problem.
Thursday’s report comes after a 2008 BBC investigation claimed the breeding processes which focused on beauty rather than health had resulted in high levels of deformity and genetic illnesses among purebred dogs. The documentary led the BBC to stop broadcasting Crufts, Britain’s biggest dog show. Sponsors also withdrew support.
Bateson’s report said inbreeding makes dogs less resilient and more prone to disease.
