Earlier this morning, Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner, who represents New York’s 9th district, reaffirmed his commitment to holding the trial of terrorist mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed on American soil. At the same time, he criticized much of the debate over the issue, which he said is making the country look as though it is “flinching” before the international community when justice — which he says in this case means Mohammed’s death — has been delayed for so long.

“I think we’re having a terrorist trial now in New York City, and it’s not disrupting very much,” Rep. Anthony Weiner, a Democrat representing New York’s , told the Washington Times yesterday.

The issue has been a contentious one. Late last year, Rep. John Shadegg of Arizona found himself in hot water after calling the decision to try KSM in New York “political correctness run amok” — among other things.

“Well Mayor, how are you gonna feel when it’s your daughter that’s kidnapped at school by a terrorist? How are you gonna feel when it’s some clerk, some innocent clerk of the court, whose daughter or son is kidnapped?” Shadegg said to Mayor Michael Bloomberg. He later apologized.

“For any member of this House to suggest that somehow to support the decision to have a trial would jeopardize the family member of the mayor of the City of New York is outrageous,” Weiner said at the time. “That member should apologize. That member then should be quiet.”
