Ilya Kovalchuk notches two assists in debut as New Jersey Devils drop Toronto Maple Leafs, 4-3

The minute that Devils president Lou Lamoriello made the deal that brought superstar left wing Ilya Kovalchuk to Newark from Atlanta, he sent a message that the Devils were making a serious run at their first Stanley Cup in seven years. It was also a message delivered to the players already in the Devils room Friday.

“It says that management believes in this team and thinks we can win now,” left wing Zach Parise said. “Now we all have to elevate our play to that level.”

Friday night, they did.
