Hundreds showed up to a playful snowball fight today at Washington D.C.’s Dupont circle, with an outer ring of participants fighting for control of the fountain against a smaller — but no less dedicated — force of defenders in the circle center. The fight, organized on Facebook under the group name The Official Dupont Snowball Fight — which grew over the last two days from 40 members to over 4,000 — won’t be the only one  in D.C. today, either.

Google reports that the term “Dupont snowball fight” ballooned in search popularity sometime this afternoon and quickly became the most popular search phrase on its entire site.

After the fight’s over, the teams will head to One Lounge (1606 20th St, 20th off Q St) for an after-party, with offerings of spiked cider & Irish coffee, the organizers say.

Reports NBC:

We Love D.C. reports on at least two battles planned: the Friendly “No Guns This Time, MPDC”! Public Snowball Fight on the Ellipse (noon to 3 p.m.) — and one by the Smithsonian Metro station (bravely scheduled for 3 p.m. to midnight), appropriately titled Snowpocalypse II: Snowball Fight and Snow Kickball. We’re not sure how the kickball folks will be able to keep track of the ball in the 17,000 feet of snow we’re getting. But hey, we admire them for trying.

The Snowpocalypse Celebration is getting a group together at Fort Dupont Park/Randle Circle in Ward 7. That one’s scheduled for noon to 2 p.m. It should be a smaller crowd, judging from their Facebook numbers, so if you’re looking to make new friend in an intimate setting, and then pummel them with snow, this might be the one for you.
