Breitbart confronts Max Blumenthal for James O’Keefe smear [video]

For those wondering why Andrew Breitbart went nuclear at this year’s CPAC conference, Max Blumenthal had this to say over at Salon earlier this week about conservative filmmaker James O’Keefe:

[O'Keefe's] right-wing admirers don’t seem to mind that O’Keefe’s short but storied career has been defined by a series of political stunts shot through with racial resentment. Now an activist organization that monitors hate groups has produced a photo of O’Keefe at a 2006 conference on “Race and Conservatism” that featured leading white nationalists…

According to One People’s Project founder Daryle Jenkins, O’Keefe was manning the literature table at the gathering that brought together anti-Semites, professional racists and proponents of Aryanism.

Blumenthal also wrote on his blog:  “Now, here is a question Breitbart: Why are you paying and defending a racist?”

The comment, as Blumenthal admits in this clip only after some prodding from Larry O’Connor, is a reference to O’Keefe.

The problem is that Blumenthal, as conference attendee Dave Weigel has pointed out, appears to have made numerous factual errors in his article. Short version: O’Keefe never manned any tables, never sided with any white supremacists, and never attended any conference devoted to white supremacy. He merely attended a debate that included several speakers and attendees, one of whom was a black man who insisted O’Keefe supported his positions.

Still, it seems plenty of people bought Blumenthal’s story that Breitbart and O’Keefe are racists:

Blumenthal, the son of Clinton administration presidential aide Sidney Blumenthal, wasn’t Breitbart’s only target at CPAC. He also referred to New York Times reporter Kate Zernike as a “despicable human being” for implying that conservatives were using racism to turn the youth vote against President Obama.
