Destroying the stockpile would be useless, unless we could destroy the centrifuges at the same time – which we cannot.
Also, this could be a ruse – the fuel could be still underground – the containers could just be above ground.
Unless the military has a gamma ray detector on one of its satellites, we cannot know if their is any radioactive material in the cases – and it is easy to fake the gamma signature (low level gamma ray source dusted on the outside of the container).
This is where human intelligence beats machines – we either need a mole in the weapons program, or some one to physically probe the containers with a Geiger counter.

One of the points that needs to be highlighted is that Iran is a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and submits its program to IAEA inspections.

In September, 2009 the IAEA called upon Israel to do the same and was met with predictable refusal and outrage for being "singled out". India and Pakistan are the only other non-signatories. North Korea withdrew in 2003.

How can you not see how that would be a bad thing??? The majority of people in Iran are EXTREMELY suspicious of outsider (especially US) involvement. Also, these people protesting are not necessarily pro-US. Our involvement would give the current Iranian government valid claim that it’s yet another attempt by the US to establish a puppet dictatorship/government in a muslim country.

the difficulty I have is why are we not supporting the opposition? they throw rocks and protest. why can we not get some shipments of AK 47′s and rpg’s that would not be traced back. why is Obama mealy mouthed about his support of the protesters. I know we have CIA in Pakistan but it seems to me that we should have special opps and CIA guys causing misery for the republican guard and the Mullahs, so no, I do not like what Obama is doing in this regard.

I think Obama is doing exactly what needs to be done with Iran – for now. The Iranian government WANTS the US to get involved. They NEED a scapegoat. Right now, there’s a revolution brewing in Iran. We all need to stay the hell out and let the Iranian dissidents build steam and topple the government. The Iranian government has already been generating propaganda fliers saying that the protesters are backed by the US and Israel – we would be terribly mistaken to give them any real fodder.

tried to do the reading you suggested and can’t find any. The closest I found was this http://www.iraqwararchive.org/data/jun23/US/wp06.pdf. I can’t find anything about 1990 -91 and have no memory of anything that came up during that time.

The issue I am simmering about are how the idiots Kerry and Hillary, Daschle et al wanted to know why we “alienated our traditional allies” in the war with Iraq and wanted us to involve them. They were talking about France and Germany ~sidebar~ if those are our traditional allies we need some new allies~. They then took over the negotiations with Iran which got very little play in 2003 when it started. They did not accomplish a thing. Obama ran on “be nice to Iran”. The libs are worthless as tits on a bull when it comes to Iran.

I have two friends from Iran…they are living here safe and sound but their parents and other family live in Iran…It would be very sad if the US or even Israel was forced into a war with them.

Note that the NIE is comprised of the learned opinion of the CIA, NSA, FBI, U.S. Air Force Intelligence, U.S. Naval Intelligence, etc. All 16 agencies UNANIMOUSLY agreed that there is no Iranian nuclear weapons program. The current government of Iran WANTS Israel or the US to strike. They’re on the verge of being toppled from within and they know it. The only thing that is going to stop that is an attack by the US or Israel so that they can rally nationalistic sentiment (and use it as an excuse to ruthlessly crack down on the protesters).

You might want to go back and see under which president (and under which secretary of defense) we missed the almost functional Iraqi nuclear program back in 1990-91. There’s a reason that Dick Cheney was skeptical of all reports in 2001-2002 that said Iraq did not have an active nuclear program. Turned out, they were months away from having a nuclear weapon and we didn’t have a clue.
