Meg Whitman invited local Bay Area press to a railroad facility tour in Oakland on Tuesday, but she refused to take their questions after her photo op concluded. The incident took a turn for the bizarre when security began physically blocking cameras as Whitman, who’s currently running for the governorship of California, made her exit.

The incident gives further ammunition to Whitman’s Republican primary opponent Steve Poizner, who has repeatedly criticized Whitman for ducking debates and other open media appearances.

Wrote San Fransciso Chronicle political reporter Carla Marinucci:

“Veteran reporters, who included KTVU’s Randy Shandobil and KPIX’s Hank Plante, were among the crowd that wasn’t amused. Question: is Whitman a candidate for governor, or a museum piece to be ‘watched’ by reporters?”

The incident at the Port of Oakland, which was covered widely by local TV stations comes a month after Whitman refused to answer reporters’ questions after a speech in Lafayette.

“There is no good reason for Meg Whitman and her campaign to go through Herculean efforts to avoid meaningful dialogue with the California press corps,” said Jon Fleischman, a vice chairman of the state Republican Party.
