It's a new day in… oh, let's call it 'America'

Font Size:

Can’t you feel it? Doesn’t the air smell sweeter? Doesn’t your food taste better? Doesn’t the sky look brighter? That’s because the House worked nights and weekends and finally passed Obamacare late last night. Now our awful, awful health care system — which a mere 87% of Americans are satisfied with — has been fixed. Yay!

How about a quick roundup of the celebratory mood this morning in our happy, happy nation?

  • Democratic gadfly Pat Caddell calls this vote a “political Jonestown” for House Democrats. That’s hardly fair… Jim Jones only killed 900 people!
  • If you’re a Democrat who voted for this, you might be thinking: “I’m glad I don’t have to go back to my district and talk about this again.” That is so adorable. What else is new in Candyland?
  • Bart Stupak bravely stood on principle and opposed the abortion provisions in the bill, right up until the second he didn’t. He ended up voting for it because Obama promised to write him a note. In other news, I just got Bart Stupak to give me two $10’s for a $5.
  • Was Stupak pulling our collective leg the whole time? Some say this clip from last October indicates his Yes vote was a foregone conclusion:
  • Stupak’s Republican opponent is named Dan Benishek. Since yesterday, Benishek’s Facebook page has gone from around 300 members to over 13,000. Wonder why?
  • Did you know that protesters at the Capitol were chanting the n-word at civil rights hero and Georgia Representative John Lewis? That’s the story, anyway. So far there’s no audio or video of the event, which seems kind of weird considering this is 2010. And the video clips we do have of Lewis confronting the protesters don’t pick up any racial epithets:
  • But hey, that doesn’t mean anything. If you’re skeptical about this, the onus is on you to prove it didn’t happen. Just because not a single person in the crowd thought to document the culprit(s), nobody else shouted them down or confronted them, and the people making the accusation have a keen interest in discrediting their critics, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t take this as gospel. And even if it didn’t happen, that doesn’t mean those redneck racist teabaggers weren’t thinking it. Hey, after a year of the Tea Partiers being called racists, based on no evidence, it’s entirely possible that they’ve finally shown us their true… um… never mind.
  • According to Reuters: “At least 36 state legislatures are weighing legislation to limit, alter or oppose the federal healthcare reform, and 26 of those are considering amending their state constitutions by ballot.” But hey, that leaves 14!
  • Commentary: “If those who rightly see ObamaCare as a potential disaster want to win, they must not accept the liberal frame of reference about this issue or history.”
  • Question for Nancy Pelosi: If you guys had achieved socialized medicine 100 years ago like you keep saying, would medical science have progressed to the point where you’d see this when you look in the mirror?
  • And a followup: Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
  • “These Marxist bastards have no idea what is coming for them. No idea.
  • “It’s-a no in my Constitution!”
  • “Look on the bright side… now we get to find out what’s in it.
