AUGUSTA, Ga. — Tiger Woods, looking as if he couldn’t believe the question, couldn’t contain himself from letting out an incredulous laugh.

“Do you like your spot on the leaderboard right now?” Woods was asked shortly after he finished off his second-round 70 to stand at 6-under par, two tantalizing shots off the Masters lead entering the weekend.

Woods probably couldn’t fathom being in such a perfect position to pounce on a fifth Green Jacket after having been away from the game for some five months as his life unraveled in sex scandal. So that question probably sounded like someone who had been stranded in the desert without water being asked if he was thirsty.
