Mets defeat Cardinals in 20 surreal innings

ST. LOUIS — In search of a solitary run the Mets and Cardinals played nearly seven hours of baseball Saturday, beginning on a warm, sunny afternoon and continuing into a chilly evening until finally the matter was resolved.

And then the runs came dribbling in. Each team waited until the 19th inning to push across a run, each scoring once to send the game into the 20th inning, when Angel Pagan scored on a sacrifice fly by Jose Reyes as the Mets went onto win, 2-1, in their longest game in 36 years.

It took 46 players 6 hours 53 minutes to complete this game, with enough substitutions and bizarre plays to baffle even the most attentive scorekeeper. At one point in the top of the 18th inning, a position player (Felipe Lopez) pitching to a relief pitcher (Raul Valdes) making the first at-bat of his career, while a starting pitcher (Kyle Lohse) was asked to go in and patrol left field.

In fact, the Cardinals used two different position players to pitch, infielder Lopez and outfielder Joe Mather. The Mets used every player except Oliver Perez, and after Francisco Rodriguez blew a save opportunity in the 19th inning, starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey was called to pitch the 20th, earning the save.
