So, the new book, “Losing Our Religion: The Liberal Media’s Attack on Christianity,” comes out on Tuesday, April 27. You’ll understand if I use this opportunity to share with you, my beloved diary readers here at The Daily Caller, some exclusive highlights. In particular, the really, really funny ones.
I’ve started doing some initial press—and getting the biggest laugh so far are the parts where I discuss the liberal media’s acrobatic contortion act in depicting President Obama as a “man of faith.” Case in point:
In April of 2009, US News & World Report published a list of Obama’s top “Ten Faith Moments,” only a few months into office. Number 7? “Joe Biden’s Receiving Ashes on Ash Wednesday.” Think about that. Somehow, the vice president doing something that millions of Americans do every year is a “faith moment”—for Obama!
It doesn’t stop there. Number 8 was “Lifting Restrictions on Federally Funded Embryonic Stem Cell Research,” which means that, for US News at least, slapping millions of Christians in the face is an intrinsic part of Obama’s theological worldview. No argument there!
Another high-larious example came from Lisa Miller, Newsweek’s resident religion columnist. (Her regular feature is ominously titled “BeliefWatch,” which always makes me picture her in fatigues, lying on her stomach on a rooftop somewhere, adjusting the scope on her sniper rifle, just waiting for a “believer” to walk into her crosshairs. We’re all incredibly grateful that she’s “watching belief” for us.)
In addition to writing scathing columns about the Pope’s “unfortunate visage,” or attacking students at Patrick Henry College as “culture warriors in the extreme,” or twisting Scripture to suggest the Bible is actually in favor of gay marriage, she also took a moment to write effusively about then-candidate Obama’s faith. The subhead promised it would be “A fascinating look at the spiritual life of a man who was raised secular but chose to become a Christian.” And boy, did it deliver. Here’s a truly awesome excerpt. (As you read, imagine you’re in a Ken Burns documentary, and someone’s gently strumming an acoustic guitar as the camera dramatically pans across purple mountains majesty.)
“Obama has spoken often and eloquently about the importance of religion in public life…. The story of Obama’s religious journey is a uniquely American tale. It’s one of a seeker, an intellectually curious young man trying to cobble together a religious identity out of myriad influences. Always drawn to life’s Big Questions, Obama embarked on a spiritual quest in which he tried to reconcile his rational side with his yearning for transcendence. He found Christ—but that hasn’t stopped him from asking questions.”
The only appropriate response to that is, “BWAH HA HA.” I especially enjoyed Newsweek’s editorial decision to capitalize “Big Questions.” For the liberal media, Sarah Palin’s Christianity meant she spoke in tongues, banned library books, believed in witches, and tried to cure homosexuals. But Obama’s Christianity meant he “embarked on a spiritual quest.”
Other laugh-tastic highlights?
- The liberal media thinks a bunch of cartoon vegetables are out to brainwash your children!
- Joy Behar thinks teaching your kids creationism is akin to child abuse!
- The New York Times thinks roadside memorials that include crosses might be unconstitutional!
- The liberal media gave Republican Mark Sanford’s scandal more coverage than embattled Democrats Eliot Spitzer, Tim Mahoney, Paul Morrison, Marc Dann, David Paterson, Kwame Kilpatrick, Sam Adams, Charlie Rangel, Jack Murtha, James Moran, Pete Visclosky, William Jefferson, John Edwards, and Roland Burris—combined!—despite the fact that they were all involved in a sex or corruption scandal.
- The liberal press dispatched dozens of investigators to Alaska to inspect Palin’s religion, but the New York Times thought Obama’s was “none of the voters’ business.” Anderson Cooper said Obama’s ties to Rev. Wright “have nothing to do with actual issues.”
- Chris Matthews is appalled that Sarah Palin and Michael Steele pray!
See, I told you, it’s really funny stuff. So if you’re looking for a fun summer read that’s sure to make you chuckle, go ahead and pick up “Losing Our Religon: The Liberal Media’s Attack on Christianity.” Because, if you don’t laugh about this stuff, you might just have to cry.
