Ex-mayor of Detroit, Kwame Kilpatrick sentenced to prison

Kwame M. Kilpatrick, who resigned as mayor of Detroit and pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice in 2008, was sentenced on Tuesday to as many as five years in prison for violating his probation. The sentence was harsher than expected, and elicited loud gasps in the courtroom.

Judge David Groner of Wayne County Circuit Court rejected a lengthy, emotional plea for lenience from Mr. Kilpatrick, and he criticized the former mayor for lying, trying to portray himself as a victim and ultimately failing the residents of Detroit.
