Of all the bumpy rides golfers were taking through the first round of the United States Open at the Pebble Beach Golf Links on Thursday, K. J. Choi’s was the most adventurous. He bogeyed the first hole, only to follow it with an even-more disastrous double-bogey on the devilish No. 2.

But what Choi accomplished from there, reeling off six birdies in 12 holes including the monstrously difficult par-5 No. 14, put him in the early lead in the Open at minus-3.
