Rep. Joe Barton faced a torrent of criticism last week for apologizing to BP executives for the White House’s insistence that the company establish a fund to compensate victims of the Gulf oil spill. Though Barton was forced to apologize for his remarks by top GOP officials, some former Republican leaders — including possible 2012 presidential contender Newt Gingrich — not only agreed with Barton but took things a step further. Speaking to Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Gingrich called the White House’s behavior ”extortion.”
