New House caucus says it’s not a ‘mouthpiece’ for Tea Party activists

The new Tea Party caucus formed by House Republicans shouldn’t be seen as leading that movement, its new members said Wednesday.

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) declaimed leadership of the Tea Party movement following the first meeting of the caucus.

“We are not the mouthpiece of the Tea Party. We are not taking the Tea Party and controlling it from Washington, D.C.,” Bachmann said at a press conference at the Capitol following the meeting.

“I am not the head of the Tea Party,” said the conservative Minnesotan, noting that none of the other lawmakers are either.
