Conservatives say they love the Constitution, and now a new effort is underway to make sure they know the text they admire so much.

So far, about 50 groups—many made up of Tea Party activists—plan to hold public readings of the Constitution on Sept. 18.

“We started talking about how many people who claim to revere the constitution really know it,” said Colin Hanna, president of the group Let Freedom Ring, “and we concluded that a lot of people kind of have a sentimental attachment to the constitution, but are not deeply familiar with it.”

He’s hoping 1,000 groups across the country will organize events. Hanna said it takes a little less than an hour to read the entire constitution out loud, so groups are encouraged to split the reading up among 10 people.

The campaign is a joint project of Constituting America and Let Freedom Ring, a 501(c)(4) whose goals are to promote constitutional government, economic freedom and traditional values. All groups—not just those made up of Tea Party activists—are encouraged to participate.
