The 1886 U.S. Olympic team felt pretty pleased with themselves when they arrived in Athens 12 days before the Games. When they realized that the Greeks used the Julian (vs. the Gregorian) calendar, they discovered that they were 12 days behind schedule, and arrived just in the nick of time.
