NORTON — Good weather and a Labor Day finish haven’t been the only constants in the eight-year history of the Deutsche Bank Championship. Big-name winners and final-round drama seem to be this tournament’s calling card, and with the bunched pack at the top owning plenty of victories, today dawns at TPC Boston dripping with possibility.
It’s an eclectic group. Of the top nine, four are Americans; two are in their 20s, two in their 40s; eight have won on the PGA Tour before; three have triumphed here.
The 20-somethings are the ones to catch, with Jason Day taking a one-shot lead over Brandt Snedeker after shooting a third-round 66 yesterday. Day’s 17-under-par total of 196 matches the tournament record, set by Mike Weir in 2008, but there’s past Deutsche Bank winners, current major champions, and confident Ryder Cup veterans breathing down his neck. Luke Donald (66) is alone in third at 15 under, with Steve Stricker (67) and Charley Hoffman (69) tied for fourth at 13 under, and a foursome five shots back at 12 under — Phil Mickelson (67), Geoff Ogilvy (65), Adam Scott (65), and Charlie Wi (67). Scott (2003), Mickelson (2006), and Stricker (2009) have Deutsche Bank trophies at home.
