Ryder Cup hopefuls state case

NORTON — When Stewart Cink, Tiger Woods, and Zach Johnson signed their scorecards following the fourth round of the Deutsche Bank Championship, they emerged from the scoring trailer as though they were supressing a secret.

Strong candidates for one of Corey Pavin’s four captain’s picks for the US Ryder Cup, the trio divulged little about the selections Pavin will announce today to round out the 12-man roster he will take to Celtic Manor in Wales.

Cink confirmed yesterday he was expecting to learn about Pavin’s picks last night.

“I think it’ll be a phone call,’’ he said. “I think a text would be too impersonal, especially if it’s a ‘No.’ I think it’s like breaking up with your girlfriend by text. I think that’s a faux pas.’’

Woods said it would be meaningful to be selected given all he’s been through recently.

“Well, I missed the last one because I was hurt, and it would be nice to be on the team,’’ he said. “I enjoy playing in the Ryder Cup.’’

Woods said he would call Pavin to let him know where he could be reached this morning.
