Public Policy Polling: Close race in West Virginia

PPP’s first look at the West Virginia Senate contest finds a very tight race with John Raese up 46-43 on Joe Manchin, a result within the poll’s margin of error.

The contest provides a fascinating choice for voters in the state who love their Democratic Governor but hate the party’s ranks in Washington DC that he would be joining.

Manchin is the second most popular Governor PPP has polled on all year, behind only Bobby Jindal, with a 59/32 approval spread. He breaks almost even with Republicans as 42% of them approve of the job he’s doing with just 44% disapproving. In a highly polarized political climate the list of politicians with that kind of crossover popularity is very short.

I grew up in WV and it has always been about Robert Byrd and the Dems. After a recent trip back home I started to think about what this love affair with Democratic politics has gotten the average West Virginian. The answer is not a hell of alot… What they need there are JOBS.Come on fellow Mountaineers ask yourself if you are better off with what you have had or maybe, just maybe you can get out of the notion that Democrats are the only people looking out for you. Please try something new , think out of the box, take a chance on a new direction, It could not be any worse then what you have had for 50 years.People in WV are smart, hardworking, God fearing people, who are always the first to sign up for military duty. You deserve much better. Don’t be scared to try something new.You may be surprised.

Speaking as a West Virginian I can say that I’m glad this is turning into an actual race. For all of my life, it’s always been Byrd & the Democrats; it’s time for someone else to have a chance.
I actually worked for one of the companies that Raese co-owns and I can honestly say that he IS a good businessman. I’m not on his payroll now and haven’t been for about 10 years, but he has people working for him that have been around for 25, 30 or even 40 years. That’s not exactly common anymore. I think he needs a chance to prove that a conservative can do just as good a job or better than just another Byrd protege.

If this is the best the Democrats can do in terms of popularity with the voters it is going to be one heck of a long night on that first Tuesday in November.

Let us hope that God hears our supplications and makes it just so and then we can show Mr. Obama our gratitude in the only real way possible – a permanent vacation in sunny and bright Marion, Illinois!

More good news: the Manchin administration is currently under investigation by the DOJ for possible criminal activity in both the Department of Highways and the Department of Administration. Add to that the fact that John Raese has the money to match Manchin’s MEGA-MILLIONS, and it looks very, very good for yet another Republican in the Senate – which could well mean a Republican majority there as well as in the House. America need to kiss off the lunatic-left socialist extremist radical agenda, and W. VA is poised to help.
