The National Republican Senatorial Committee is putting West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin in its crosshairs, mocking the Democrat for an ad in which he appeared to shoot a copy of cap and trade legislation.

“Joe Manchin is on a hunting trip,” a voice says in the new NRSC ad. It replays part of Manchin’s own ad in which the governor loads his gun. “He’s hunting for votes.”

The NRSC is accusing the Democrat, who is locked in a tight race with GOP candidate John Raese, of “camouflaging his support for President Obama’s worst policies.” Republicans have sought to make the contest a referendum on Obama and not on Manchin, who remains popular as governor.

An NRSC spot earlier this month backfired after it was revealed that the spot made use of out of state actors who were asked to look “hicky.”*

*An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that the NRSC had not run an ad in West Virginia since the “hicky” ad.
