Florida independent Senate candidate Charlie Crist’s campaign on Friday denied a news report indicating that a lack of funds would harm the governor on the homestretch of the race.

“We have millions of dollars of TV air time already purchased and significant resources to communicate to common-sense Floridians that Charlie Crist is the only honest, independent alternative to Tea Party extremist Marco Rubio,” Danny Kanner, Crist’s spokesperson, said in an e-mail.

The St. Petersburg Times reported Thursday that Crist’s campaign is “running on fumes.”

The Times reported that Crist had only $1.39 million cash on hand. The governor is in a three-way race with Rubio, who defeated Crist in the GOP primary, and Democrat Kendrick Meek. Recent polls are showing Rubio in the lead by a comfortable margin.
