Religious undercurrent runs through US Senate race

LONDON, Ky. — A western Kentucky minister says that Republican U.S. Senate candidate Rand Paul is facing renewed attacks on his religion through automated calls to voters.

The Rev. Lucy Tedrick of Marion, a Republican pastor who supports Paul, said she got a call Friday saying Paul “is not a Christian and that he hates Christianity.”

Paul campaign manager Jesse Benton says the calls are “deplorable.” Conway spokesman John Collins said the campaign did not authorize or place any such calls.

Tedrick said the call was credited to the Kentucky Leadership Council, led by retired Marine Lt. Col. Andrew Horne. The Center for Responsive Politics says the group has spent more than $130,000 opposing Paul. He didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment.
