CA Dems space out on marijuana proposition

The California Democratic Party is behaving as though controversial Proposition 19, the California ballot initiative to legalize marijuana, does not exist.

In an email to Democrats listing the “Democratic Ticket” for California’s election tomorrow, Prop 19 is noticeably missing from the list of “important ballot propositions.” Instead, the list begins with Prop 20.

The Party’s official stance on Prop 19 is “neutral.” The party’s executive committee voted not to actively endorse the proposition in July for fear that such an endorsement could hurt candidates running on the Democratic ticket.

Both Barbara Boxer, the Democratic incumbent for Senate, and Jerry Brown, the Democratic candidate for governor, have come out against Prop 19, linking the legalization of marijuana to an increase in crime or trouble with Mexico.
