Gov.-elect Rick Scott hints at school vouchers for all at St. Petersburg rally

ST. PETERSBURG — Florida Gov.-elect Rick Scott on Thursday blew the door wide open to the idea of a voucherlike program for all students, saying he’s working with lawmakers to allow state education dollars to follow a student to the school his or her parents choose.

He did not use the term vouchers. Others called it an “education savings account.”

But whatever it’s called, the incoming governor, key lawmakers and a foundation tied to former Gov. Jeb Bush are setting the stage for Florida to consider one of the most radical education ideas that it — or arguably any state — has ever considered.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Now may be a good time to bring back the voucher issue again with all of the criticism and turmoil that public education is encountering. Parents should have the right to send their children where they feel they will receive the best education not the government.

Hope he succeeds…he will have many enemies, Teachers Unions- leftist-loons will be rabid, if he did get some of this done other states may follow, like NJ and so forth..much needed, we need to get rid of the Dept of Education turn it back to the states, Unions and dems have destroyed the educational system, which is what their agenda was and is in the first place.

Good points. The government monopoly on education has produced what every monopoly produces: a sub par product at an artificially inflated price and no opportunity to shop elsewhere.

We’ve proposed this for decades. Let the money go with the kid. Then let the kid choose where to spend it. All the whining and sniveling will come from teachers unions and bureaucrats… the blood sucking non-productive part of our so-called educational system.

This will reward effective schools and teachers. Well… I guess we’ll have to put a stop to that! /sarc

Want to fix American schools? DO NOT MAKE IT MANDATORY!! Make it a privilege. In many countries, kids have to pass stringent qualification exams to be given the OPPORTUNITY to attend high school. By making it mandatory, you let 5% of the students use up 90% of the resources because they’re either not cut out for school or are complete shiate heads. Make school a privilege that kids have to EARN. If they don’t earn it, well, we always need burger flippers so have a good life.

When I have more information I might actually like this idea. Something has to be done about public education in this country and we may as well start experimenting here in Florida. For what it costs to send a kid to public school these days, you could probably spend only a little more and have a private school education. I hope Rick Scott can make this idea work!

    Good luck with that.
I can think of a hundred reasons why this will be stopped by a judge somewhere.
The teachers unions will hate it.
    Atheists will hate it.
The Dept of Education will hate it.
School bus drivers will hate it.
    Textbook companies will hate it.
    The ACLU will hate it.
    GLBT groups will hate it.

Lefties hate it when parents try to take their kids out of public school because that is the breeding ground where they can indoctrinate them young.

    Go for it Governor Scott!!

Jeb did amazing things with Florida’s education only to have Charlie knock it back down.
