ROME—Parcel bombs exploded at the Swiss and Chilean embassies to Italy in the capital on Thursday, injuring two people and raising concerns of possible terrorist attacks in the country’s shopper-packed streets ahead of the Christmas holidays.

“We are trying to determine what this is all about, but it’s in any case serious,” Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini told reporters, adding that Italy was alerting its diplomatic offices abroad. A spokesman for Italy’s police department said law enforcement officers were carrying out inspections at other embassies in Rome.
