An open letter to Speaker Boehner

Dear Speaker Boehner,

Congratulations on your new Republican majority and your election as the 61st Speaker of the House! We conservatives have been given a tremendous opportunity to make the responsible and positive changes America so desperately needs at this consequential moment in our history. As you are acutely aware, the United States remains in the midst of a severe economic downturn. House Republicans were swept into power largely because voters came to the conclusion that President Obama, Former Speaker Pelosi, and Senate Majority Leader Reid didn’t have their priorities straight. The voters were absolutely correct!

As the economy continued to stumble, the national Democrat leadership instead focused on their health care takeover for an entire year. By making this irresponsible decision, they lost the public trust on economic issues. On November 2nd, the public loaned their trust to Republicans to help fix our economy and get America back on track. According to a recent CBS News poll, 56 percent of those polled said jobs and the economy are the issues they want the 112th Congress to focus on first and foremost. Conversely, health care registered a distant second at 14 percent. Statistics such as this are unmistakable: Americans want their national leadership to concentrate on innovative solutions to kick-start our economy and create jobs.

I understand that during the 2010 election season Republicans successfully campaigned on repealing the Obama-Pelosi-Reid health care law as well as fixing the economy. I applaud you for scheduling an up-or-down vote in the U.S. House on a full repeal of Obamacare, which should pass with your commanding majority. Unfortunately, however, the numbers do not exist to do the same in a U.S. Senate led by Harry Reid. Therefore, after the vote, I urge you to rapidly pivot back to job creation, deficit reduction, and the economy. What a shame it would be to get bogged down in a protracted health care debate, let our guard down on the economy and forfeit the issue back to the Democrats!

You have been elected our nation’s House Speaker at a point when the unemployment rate has been above 9 percent for 19 straight months for the first time since 1982-1983. Additionally, our national debt has recently surpassed the astonishing $14 trillion mark. The debt has risen by more than $3 trillion in the past two years alone. Difficult cuts and major reforms have to be made under your leadership. For the sake of our children and grandchildren, we can’t afford to merely trim around the edges!

I wish you all the best as you confront these monumental challenges over the next two years. I am optimistic that if we stay faithful to our core conservative principles, we can accomplish much for the American people and the conservative movement. Citizens United’s 500,000 members and supporters, as well as Americans across the nation, are counting on you.

Sincerely,

David N. Bossie
