Lawmakers vote to ban picketing at Tucson funerals

PHOENIX — Arizona legislators quickly approved emergency legislation Tuesday to head off picketing by a Topeka, Kan., church near the funeral service for a 9-year-old girl who was killed during Saturday’s shooting in Tucson. Unanimous votes by the House and Senate cleared the way for the bill to go to Gov. Jan Brewer later Tuesday for her expected signature. It would take effect immediately.

Without specifically mentioning the Tucson shooting, the proposed law would prohibit protests at or near funeral sites.

Dozens of lawmakers co-sponsored the bill, and legislative action was completed within 90 minutes. The Senate’s committee hearing took just three minutes.

The Westboro Baptist Church said Monday it plans to picket Thursday’s funeral for Christina Taylor Green because “God sent the shooter to deal with idolatrous America.” The fundamentalist church has picketed many military funerals to draw attention to its view that the deaths are God’s punishment for the nation’s tolerance of homosexuality.

There is an appropriate time and place for everything. A funeral is NEVER the appropriate place for a protest. Those that call this a First Ammendment issue are off base, in my opinion. No one is telling anyone they can’t protest.. But they do NOT have the right to harrass others, especially during such a difficult time.. Others have rights too … and they have a right to a peaceful moment of respect ….

Though, I have to stay I’m ticked off that only NOW is congress discussing this issue… Not while they were simply protesting a ‘common-soldier’… No.. only when a politician was targeted do they show any concern….

I don’t like what the Westboro Baptist Church is doing at all but this law won’t hold up if challenged. What has worked against the Westboro Baptist Church in my area of Missouri is for volunteers to stand in front of them, cover them up and give them a hard time without any violence. It has worked and has driven them away. People came from all over to provide help during a young soldiers funeral. It was amazing to see the support for that young man.

Westboro Baptist Church preaches hate… just like Muslim extremists. They should be put on the “terrorist organization” list.

I guess it is never too soon to flush the Constitution down the toilet. Banning picketing at funerals is no less a First Amendment violation than banning picketing anywhere else. That they are “disgusting and repulsive” is hardly legitimate reason to ban such protests and assertions to the contrary are laughable and pathetic.

finally!! i have been waiting a long time for a law that would ban protesting at funerals. i hate westboro baptist church so much (and i pretty much never use the word hate for people). i hear so many stories about their moronic protests. not only at funerals but at other events. i’m surprised a law like this took so long to make, it’s just being made now. disgusting and repulsive don’t even begin to describe westboro protests.
