Obamacare is a lot like Obama himself. It seems great beforehand but once it gets going it spends too much and disappoints everybody. Charles Krauthammer wrote in the Washington Post that Republicans should let Obamacare fail on its own merits. But the Congressional Budget Office estimates a possible $500 billion in savings if Congress repeals Obamacare now. Granted, Democrats control the Senate and White House. But 46 percent of Americans — including 24 percent of Democrats — support repealing Obamacare in the latest Gallup poll. And some Democrats up for reelection — Claire McCaskill, for instance — are backtracking on some of the law’s major provisions. After the Arizona shooting, the GOP bumped a repeal vote set for tomorrow in the House. Fine. But that can’t be an excuse for them to drop it altogether.
There has to be healthcare reform. But that can happen through tax breaks for people in need of expensive care and increased competition among health insurers. Putting the government in charge of it is like putting Courtney Love in charge of her sanity; it’s misplaced confidence. Obamacare has to go.
