Teenage deaths caused by drug and alcohol abuse are bound to be covered by local papers, and usually ignored by the national media, unless that notoriously fruity beverage Four Loko is somehow involved.

This was the case for the death of two California teens whose bodies were found in a vacant Huntington Beach apartment. According to the LA Times, a single can of Four Loko was found at the crime scene, causing major news sources to broadcast the story in a hurry.

Police will not release the autopsy reports until the investigation is closed, however the cause of death is cited as being alcohol and drug related. The Associated Press also reports that the bodies had physical evidence of drug abuse.

The frat house drink contains 135 mg of caffeine and weighs in at 12 percent alcohol per volume. While the details of this case remain to be disclosed, other Loko related hospitalizations throughout the US have driven states to ban the beverage from sale all-together.

Critics of the ban, such as the Suffolk Journal’s Ryan Boyle, feel that the problem remains with the consumer’s drinking behavior rather than the beverage itself.
