Mark Sanford’s romantic vacation in Uruguay

Five days after leaving office as the governor of South Carolina, Mark Sanford arrived in Uruguay on January 17 for a romantic vacation with Argentine girlfriend Maria Belen Chapur.

Sanford was famously caught in an extramarital affairs while in office, claiming to be “hiking the Appalachian Trail” in June 2009 when in fact visiting Chapur. In February 2010 Sanford and his wife Jenny divorced.

Photos of the couple on the beach in Punte del Este were published in Argentine magazine Caras.

In a Daily Caller profile published shortly before leaving office, Sanford said “never say never” about his future in politics.
