Indiana Republican Rep. Mike Pence announced Thursday that he will not run for president in the 2012 election.

Pence, a six-term congressman, served as chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee from 2005 to 2007 and as chairman of the House Republican Conference from 2009 until January 2011.

As reported by the Indianapolis Star, Pence has circulated a letter to supporters announcing the decision.

“In the choice between seeking national office and serving Indiana in some capacity, we choose Indiana,” wrote Pence. “We will not seek the Republican nomination for president in 2012.”

The Indianapolis Star further reported that Pence is believed to be considering a run to succeed Republican Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels in 2012.
