Boston is poised to become the next major American city to pass a ban on smoking in public places.

According to the Boston Globe, two city council members intend to introduce a measure to ban smoking at parks and beaches.

Felix G. Arroyo and Salvatore LaMattina, the measure’s proponents, both have asthma. The Globe lists two other council members as supporters of the proposal.

A vote on the ban is not expected for several more weeks.

New York City recently passed a similar measure that will take effect later this year.
