CBS News chief foreign correspondent Lara Logan was stripped, whipped with flagpoles, and beaten in Tahrir Square while she reported on Egypt’s political unrest, reports the Times of London.

Logan was attacked by thugs, who reportedly dragged her away from her news team during public celebrations of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s resignation. Logan was reportedly stripped and beaten for a half hour, leaving her covered in welts and wounds. Logan also endured “aggressive pinching,” the Times reported, citing American sources.

According to the New York Post, Logan escaped being raped when a group of Egyptian women jumped on top of her as a way to protect her.

Logan’s news crew did not escape the incident unscathed. The Times added that attackers broke the hand of a security guard.

“Lara is getting better daily,” a friend told the Times. “The psychological trauma is as bad as, if not worse than, the physical injuries. She might talk about it at some time in the future, but not now.”

CBS News said in a statement last week that Logan suffered a “brutal and sustained” sexual assault as she covered Egypt’s political unrest. Logan was released from the hospital Wednesday and returned to her Washington, D.C.-area home to be with her husband and children.
