IHOP giving out free pancakes for charity

Citizens, prepare for first lady Michelle Obama’s March 1st nightmare: 490 carbo-loaded calories worth of pancakes for FREE! And that calorie calculation is sans the maple syrup — a 1/2 cup of which will run you over 400 calories — and other calorie laced toppings.

The International House of Pancakes (IHOP) will be holding their 6th annual National Pancake Day Tuesday where the breakfast food giant will treat patrons to a free short stack of IHOP’s “signature” buttermilk pancakes.

Mrs. Obama may unclench her teeth a bit to hear that the event is not just a ploy for IHOP to fatten up their clientele, the day is meant to encourage people to donate money to the Children’s Miracle Network — which raises money for 170 children’s hospitals.

“IHOP’s National Pancake Day has become a highly anticipated annual event in communities throughout the United States, and provides our guests a fun opportunity to support the efforts of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and other local charities,” said Jean Birch, IHOP’s president.

IHOP hopes to beat last year’s total of just over $2.1 million and raise $2.3 million this year. Since 2006, IHOP has pulled in over $5.35 million to support charities such as the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and other local charities.

“Last year, we surpassed our goal of raising $5 million in our first five years, and this year we are raising the bar again with our most ambitious fundraising goal to date,” said Birch.
