Tennessee Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander said on Sunday that billionaire real estate mogul and possible Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump cannot beat President Barack Obama.

“There’s always someone like Donald Trump who has absolutely no chance of winning,” Alexander told CNN’s Candy Crowley. “He’s famous for being famous.”

Alexander also claimed “there are only two to three people on either side who have any real chance to be president of the United States” and said that former Minnesota Governor and possible GOP presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty has a much better chance than Trump of winning the Republican nomination.

He also said former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney was someone “likely to run and is clearly someone who has the ability to do it.”

“There are others who could but they haven’t indicated they’re sure to run, like Mike Huckabee, Mitch Daniels, Haley Barbour, Governor Pawlenty,” Alexander continued. “And then you’ve got Newt with the force of his ideas, and Sarah Palin with the force of her personality.”

According to Alexander, “any incumbent president is formidable” and beating Obama will not be easy. “This is a lot harder than it looks,” he said.
