‘Twofer’ – neuter your dog and yourself!

Great news, fellas! If you have a cat or dog neutered between March 29 and April 27, 2011 you too could be eligible for a snipping, re: a vasectomy.

In a never-before-seen carrot and stick approach, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) are coaxing pet owners to sterilize their furry friends, using the possibility of a free vasectomy as the proverbial carrot.

To recognize “National Infertility Awareness Week” -beginning April 24th- PETA will judge entrants’ ability to answer their (likely randomly selected) question: “Why should PETA neuter you?”

“Entrants must furnish proof of their age, and a dated neuter certificate for their dog or cat from a certified veterinarian, in order to claim the prize,” PETA’s website explains. “One eligible winner will be selected, based on his level of creativity and persuasiveness in arguing why he deserves to win and how his sterilization will most benefit both humans and animals.”

The reason for PETA’s novel interest in your reproductive system, is concern about human overpopulation, which they say is harming animal habitats.

“Disappearing wilderness, vanishing water resources, and pollution is the price that future generations will pay for more human births, while losing their lives is the price that millions of homeless dogs and cats pay when guardians neglect to “fix” their companion animals,” writes PETA.

The organization is further hoping their effort will encourage more people to neuter their pets, as according to PETA, the best way to avoid having the estimated 6 to 8 million dogs and cats end up in animal shelters, annually, is sterilization.
