Donald Trump is “really proud” and “really honored” to have been the game changer in getting President Obama to finally release his long-form birth certificate on Wednesday morning.
Trump said he was “really honored to have really played to have played a really big role in hopefully, hopefully, getting rid of this issue.”
Touching down in New Hampshire for a few private meetings, Trump held a press conference at local airport to discuss the just-released documents. While he still needs to “look at it,” Trump said he hopes the release of the certificate will put to rest not just any debate about the President’s legitimacy but also the inquisition by journalists who have grilled Trump about his public remarks regarding the certificate.
The real estate tycoon has used the birther issue as the launching pad of his most recent potential presidency bid. As journalists continuously harangue Trump, the issue launched him to the top of the polls of potential Republican candidates. In the past two weeks, Trump has fought back, asking journalists why they aren’t asking him questions on other policy areas.
“I want to look at at it but I hope it’s true so that we can get on to much more important matters, so the press can stop asking me questions,” said Trump. “He should have done it a long time ago”
Trump has already released his own birth certificate and told George Stephanopoulos he that would release his much-discussed financial records (Trump has reportedly experienced a couple bankruptcies and a fluctuating wealth) after Obama released his birth certificate.
Asked at the press conference about his own tit-for-tat promise, Trump moved on to other issues dear to him, such as the power of OPEC.
“I hope it checks out beautifully. I am really proud, I am really honored,” said Trump. “Now we can talk about oil, we can talk about gasoline prices. We can talk about China ripping off our country.”
Trump said “We have to look at it. Is it real? Is it prop?” but again expressed his desire to move on to discuss other issues including why Obama has not released his — poor, according Trump — academic records.
