Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and his team were first of potential 2012 presidential contenders out of the gate to congratulate the U.S. intelligence forces for killing Osama bin Laden.

“This is a great victory for lovers of freedom and justice everywhere,” said Romney’s statement, which arrived in mailboxes at 11.52 p.m., only a few minutes after the president finished his announcement.

“Congratulations to our intelligence community, our military and the president. My thoughts are with the families of Osama bin Laden’s many thousands of victims, and the brave servicemen and women who have laid down their lives in pursuit of this murderous terrorist.”
