Though she’s gone out of her way to hide it from the public and curious reporters, France’s first lady Carla Bruni is pregnant.

The Guardian quoted Bruni’s father-in-law saying he was happy to welcome a grandchild.

Pal Sarkozy, the father of France’s president Nicolas Sarkozy, told Bild, “I’m glad to be having a grandchild.”

The proud grandfather-to-be added, “The two [Bruni and son Nicolas] do not want to know the gender in advance, but I’m sure it will be a girl and as beautiful as Carla.”

Reuters reports that Sarkozy’s office said it did not comment on his personal matters. According to Paris Match, Bruni’s mother, Marisa Bruni Tedeschi, announced her daughter would soon be having a baby.

For weeks, media outlets have addressed the buzz around Bruni’s possible pregnancy. Normally slender, the former supermodel turned pop-folk artist has veiled her belly with a shawl when photographers approached in recent months. In a May interview with Le Parisien, Bruni did not confirm or deny pregnancy rumors.

“If I may, I will not answer all these familial questions. I have a little boy, too, and I do not answer questions about him,” Bruni told the publication. “Why don’t I answer? I’ll tell you. Nearly 180 percent of the time my husband is occupied by his country. He speaks only about that, he only does that, he is obsessed with it … I’m mum to protect something and to protect all of the work he does.”

The 43-year-old singer already has one child with former companion Raphaël Enthoven.
