Mitt Romney plans to announce his candidacy for president June 2 in New Hampshire, a Romney aide confirmed Thursday to The Daily Caller.

The former Massachusetts governor is set to become the first presidential candidate to announce his bid in New Hampshire, which holds the nation’s first primary.

The story was first reported by UnionLeader.com’s John DiStaso and was confirmed by TheDC.

Romney is preparing to join a Republican field already officially occupied by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Minn. Gov. Tim Pawlenty, businessman Herman Cain, former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson and Texas Rep. Ron Paul.

Former Penn. Sen. Rick Santorum plans to announce his candidacy June 6, and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann is expected to declare her White House intentions soon.

Former Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman, also considering a bid, recently completed a five-day trip throughout New Hampshire, meeting potential voters and the press.

Romney recorded the Web video announcing his exploratory committee last month in front of the University of New Hampshire’s football stadium.

UnionLeader.com reports that Romney will make his formal announcement at a barbecue lunch at Stratham’s Bittersweet Ranch, owned by Doug and Stella Scammon, both former members of the New Hampshire House and strong GOP supporters.
