French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, who has been the subject of pregnancy rumors for months, has finally joined family members in coming forward about expecting a baby.

Last week, the Italian-French singer/actress flaunted her pregnant stomach in a bikini shot taken in Fort de Brégançon. At the time, Bruni-Sarkozy had yet to confirm or deny whether she had a baby on the way, but in a new interview with the Nice-Matin newspaper, the 43-year-old mother of one addressed the topic.

Bruni-Sarkozy told the French publication that her condition is “coming happiness, unexpected and unhoped for.”

When asked about the gender of her unborn child, the elegant songbird said, “That, I don’t even know myself. There are certain things which one should keep secret.”

As for the discretion on her pregnancy, Bruni-Sarkozy said, as translated by the Huffington Post, “First of all, to protect myself, to not put my private life on display. It’s a source of great happiness for me, but after all, it’s banal and the people [of France] have plenty of problems, so it would be inappropriate to talk about it. We are already so media-exposed.”

The former model stoked pregnancy rumors earlier this year when she would shield her belly every time photographers approached with cameras. In a May interview with Le Parisien, Bruni-Sarkozy remained mum on mom talk.

“If I may, I will not answer all these familial questions. I have a little boy, too, and I do not answer questions about him,” Bruni said. “Why don’t I answer? I’ll tell you. Nearly 180 percent of the time my husband is occupied by his country. He speaks only about that, he only does that, he is obsessed with it … I’m mum to protect something and to protect all of the work he does.”

But Bruni-Sarkozy’s family members weren’t hush-hush on the baby discussion nearly as long as she was. (Carla Bruni expecting a child, say grandparents-to-be)

Pal Sarkozy, the father of France’s president Nicolas Sarkozy, told Bild in May, “I’m glad to be having a grandchild … The two [Bruni and son Nicolas] do not want to know the gender in advance, but I’m sure it will be a girl and as beautiful as Carla.”

Bruni-Sarkozy already has a son with former companion Raphaël Enthoven.
