Longtime bachelor Patrick Kennedy tied the knot with Amy Petitgout on Friday at the Kennedy family compound in Hyannisport, Mass.

The 44-year-old former Rhode Island Democratic congressman exchanged vows with his sweetheart, a school teacher, in a ceremony officiated by Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. Patrick, the son of the late Sen. Ted Kennedy, wore a navy blazer, white pants and a blue striped tie.

“I’m the luckiest guy, she’s the best I could have ever imagined and I’m lucky to be able to share this day with her,” Kennedy told reporters on his wedding day.

Though Kennedy’s father couldn’t be around for the nuptials, the groom says he felt his dad’s presence at the gathering.

“I feel like my dad’s kind of orchestrating everything from up above, and he’s doing a great job so far, and he’s telling us get out on his sailboat and enjoy the ocean like he always did,” Kennedy told the Cape Cod Times.

According to the Times, Breyer had some trouble entering the compound because police officials didn’t recognize him upon his arrival in a Volvo station wagon. They were quick to acknowledge their mistake, apologize, and let Breyer pass through, reports the Times. (Carla Bruni confirms pregnancy)

Before the wedding, Patrick joined family members and his future in-laws for a sailing adventure on his father’s boat, Mya. Patrick and brother Edward M. “Ted” Kennedy Jr. were reportedly seen strolling down the boardwalk at the Hyannisport Yacht Club.

“I’m taking the groom out for a little sail this afternoon to get him all relaxed and ready for the ceremony later,” Ted Jr. told reporters on Eugenia Fortes Beach.
