Perry group gains presence for Iowa Straw Poll

Texas Gov. Rick Perry has yet to announce a run for the presidency. His supporters, however, are all set to propel him to the Oval office.

This week, Americans for Rick Perry, an independent group of supporters unaffiliated with the governor and based in California and Texas, will be opening headquarters in Iowa to acquire a presence for the straw poll in August, Real Clear Politics reported Tuesday.

While Perry has not made his intentions known, the Texas governor has garnered serious support and hinted at a possible run.

“I’m not ready to tell you that I’m ready to announce that I’m in,” Perry told The Des Moines Register this month. “But I’m getting more and more comfortable every day that this is what I’ve been called to do. This is what America needs.”

While Perry has not committed to a run, the 527 organization told TheDC’s Matt Lewis last week that the group is trying to generate more buzz for the possible candidate.

“We just want to make a splash,” Bob Schuman, national campaign director for Americans for Perry, said.

The supporters on the ground are largely composed of former Newt Gingrich staffers, who left the Gingrich campaign over directional differences. (Draft DeMint leader joins ‘Americans for Rick Perry’)

Perry campaign consultant David Carney, another former Gingrich advisor, told TheDC that Perry still has yet to make a decision.
