Mayor Bloomberg gives $50 million to fight coal-fired power plants

New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg will donate $50 million to the Sierra Club to support its nationwide campaign to eliminate coal-fired power plants.

Sierra Club executive director Michael Brune described the gift from Bloomberg Philanthropies, which will be spread out over four years, as “a game-changer, from our perspective.” The group will devote the money to its “Beyond Coal” campaign, which has helped block the construction of 153 new coal-fired power plants across the country since 2002.

Brune said in a phone interview that the group will use the money “to identify the oldest, dirtiest coal-fired power plants, retire them and replace them with clean energy.” Some of the utilities the expanded campaign will focus on are in the Washington area, including the GenOn plant in Alexandria.

Liberal energy plan: No coal. No oil. No gas. No nuke. No hydro. No wood stoves. Put up a windmill (made in China) to provide 1% of energy needs and only when the wind blows. Survivors live in caves and eat rats because all other game is “protected.”

In addition Bloomberg should be forced to swear off sitting in any lighted and/or air-conditioned room –

Bloomberg is an idiot. I get tired of these rich bastards throwing their money around. They can’t possibly be stupid enough to think that wind generators and solar will power this entire country.

    Good Lord!
Does anyone take Bloomberg seriously anymore?

For those with doubts that Bloomberg has gone bonkers, what happens to NYC when they have a power outage?
On a related note, Arizona should shut down the nuclear plant (Palo Verde) that supplies a big chunk of the power enjoyed by Californians, as in Los Angeles.
Sure. Go for it. Rots O’Ruck, envirowhackos.
The hypocrisy is oozing out all over the place.

OK. I think it’s only fitting that New York City have their electric grid reduced by exactly the amount of energy they’re taking away from the rest of the country—and unemployed coal workers need to move to NYC and apply for welfare. It’s like California refusing to build ANY energy facilities or water facilities and then go begging from the rest of us–or impose their standards on us. And like LA and SF being deeply in debt because they welcome all illigal aliens and give them health care, schooling and welfare and let them decide their elections.
