Half of all U.S. June job gains came from Wisconsin

MADISON — Gov. Scott Walker has made a mantra of his oft-turned slogan, “Wisconsin is open for business,” and his critics have just as often chided it.

But the latest data show job growth in the Badger State, while by no means robust, is booming compared with U.S. job creation, which effectively ground to a halt last month.

Wisconsin posted a net gain of 9,500 jobs between May and June. While the public sector shed 3,400 jobs, the private sector added 12,900 positions in June, the largest one-month gain in nearly eight years, according to statistics from the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development.
